Burning River Boulder Battle

Category placement will be determined based on climbing performance during the qualification round 

At the end of the qualification round all competitors will be ranked from highest to lowest final score 

The top 6 athletes in each gender/non-binary group will be placed in the Finalists category 

The remaining competitors will be divided into 3 categories: Recreational, Intermediate, and Advanced 

The top 30% of remaining competitors will be placed in Advanced 

The middle 40% of remaining competitors will be placed in Intermediate 

The lower 30% of remaining competitors will be placed in Recreational 

Competitors will have 4 hours to climb during the qualification round 

If the number of competitors exceeds 125 there will be two 3-hour qualification rounds 

Competitors can try boulders in any order they choose 

Attempts on boulders are limited to 8 attempts and must be noted for scoring 

Competitors will mark attempts and completed boulders on scorecards 

Completed boulders must be witnessed and signed off on by a fellow competitor 

The qualification round will consist of 40 boulders from V0 to V10+ 

Each boulder will be ranked from 1 to 40, with 40 being the most difficult 

The point value of each boulder will be 10x the rank (boulder number 20=200 points) 

There will be a 1 point deduction for each attempt after the first (flash=full points) 

With a max of 8 attempts 

A competitor’s final score will be the top 5 boulders they complete during qualification 

Qualification boulders will have TOP only for scoring opportunities 

At the end of the qualification round finalists will be identified and the remaining competitors will be divided into categories 

The top 3 competitors of each gender/non-binary within each category will be announced for the podium and awards shortly after the qualification round ends 

In the event of a tie within the top 6 finalist spots additional competitors will placed into the Finalists category 

The finals round will be onsight format 

Finalists will have an 8-minute observation period to preview the Finals boulders 

They will then be restricted to an isolation area (fitness area) and won’t be allowed to watch other Finalists climb 

Finalists will climb in the opposite order from their qualification ranking (6th place climbs first) 

The first female/non-binary and male/non-binary climbers will begin at the same time 

Each climber will have 5 minutes to climb each boulder, with 5 minute rest periods between 

The finals round will consist of 4 boulders for each gender/non-binary group 

Finals boulders will have ZONE and TOP for scoring opportunities 

Each ZONE will be worth 10 points, and each TOP will be worth 25 points 

There will be a 0.1 point deduction for each attempt 

A competitor’s Finals score will be the total points of all ZONEs or TOPs earned minus attempts 

The top 3 scoring athletes in each gender/non-binary group will be announced for the podium and awards immediately follow Finals. 

In the event of a tie in the Finals Round, ranking will be determined by qualification round ranking
